This month, we’re pleased to feature Venezuelan composer and musicologist Juan López-Maya. His catalog includes a large number of works for chamber ensembles, of which many have received local awards. Others have been performed by Venezuelan ensembles as well as renowned international groups.
In addition, his specialization as a musicologist has allowed him to rescue and edit works by 19th Venezuelan composers that are being published as part of the series, “Venezuelan Masters of the Fin-de-Siècle,” by Cayambis Music Press. López-Maya has not only written about Masonic rituals and their relationship to Venezuelan music, but has also published a number of articles about Latin American music and its performance. For example, the Spanish journal Todoflauta recently published his review of a compact disk of Latin American music recorded by the America flutist, Stephanie Jutt.
