Jacobo Ficher

Born in 1896 in the Ukraine, Jacobo Ficher received his earliest musical training in Odessa and St. Petersburg, where in 1919 he won a position as concertmaster of the state opera orchestra. In 1923 he settled in Buenos Aires, and began to develop an intense artistic activity as a violinist but later as a composer and conductor. Over the course of the next thirty years he not only played a role in the formation of important music organizations in Argentina, he also won a number of prestigious composition prizes in Argentina and in other foreign countries. In 1957, for example, his saxophone quartet won second prize in a festival of contemporary Latin American music organized in Uruguay. Ficher died in Buenos Aires in 1978.
